We were founded by a bold community member who dared to fight against inequality and poverty.
When Dorothy Dulo returned home from college to her village in Western Kenya, she found her parents had taken in many orphaned children.
The AIDS epidemic had ravaged her village of Alendu, abruptly orphaning dozens of children. Unexpectedly left with only distant relatives to provide for their basic needs, these children had little hope of living a full life.
Dorothy’s father, a retired educator by trade, began teaching a kindergarten class for these children who had nowhere else to turn. Without access to a classroom, the students started their education under the shade of a nearby tree. This is where Sawa Africa Foundation’s story begins.
Founded by a visionary community member, Sawa Africa acts as a catalyst for change at grassroot levels. Our human centered designs and strategies result in lasting change.
Sawa Africa invests in a community-led approach that includes community leadership, Community empowerment, and Community Led program implementation.
We go into the hardest of rural communities, sharing the love of Jesus, providing holistic education, economic empowerment, medical care and raising future leaders.
We partner with individuals, teams, institutions, churches, companies and organizations to raise the support that gives love, hope and a bright future to vulnerable children, youths and women in Kenya.
We are grateful for our network of funding, research and implementing partners who share our mission to build the capacity of rural communities and advance their own holistic well being. We value every partner and would love the opportunity to connect with you in a unique and meaningful way.
