Give children foundational skills for lifelong learning

Foundational learning skills are much more than academics. It’s the foundation that strengthens literacy, numeracy, life skills and values so children build the confidence and capability to succeed both in school and beyond. When teaching improves, children thrive.

Yet access to foundational learning skills is still out of reach for nearly 1 in 4 children in rural Kenya. The good news: A gift of just $10 a month is enough to bring 30 learners – an entire classroom – learning skills each year.

VILLAGE AMBASSADOR

Join the global community serving 6000 children every month

When you give to Sawa Africa, 100% of your donation goes directly to closing gaps in early years of education in rural communities of Western Kenya. We won’t stop until every child in rural Kenya has access to foundational learning skills. Our monthly giving community, Village Ambassadors, helps us do just that.

Our literacy and numeracy innovative interventions are locally-led and learner centered. We partner with local governments and teachers. We upskill and mentor teachers who implement the innovation in their classrooms daily.

Village Ambassadors are essential to this cycle. We count monthly gifts to fill in any funding gaps that may arise or account for potential changes in the project completion. Village Ambassadors enable us to mentor teachers with confidence and make the best long-term investments in rural communities.

Village Ambassadors fund foundational learning for more that 25,000 learners in 40 schools in Kisumu County every year.

Foundational Skills for Learning ensures thriving learners and communities.

An estimated 300 million students worldwide still lack the basic numeracy and literacy skills they need to succeed in life. In Kisumu County where we currently work, only 3 out of 10 children in Grade 3 can do Grade 2 level work, and 6 out of every 100 Grade 8 students still cannot do Grade 2 level work – meaning they complete nearly their entire primary education without basic foundational skills.

We’re on a mission to change that. When you donate to Sawa Africa, you’re investing in the hopes and dreams of families in rural Western Kenya. Children stay in school and improve their classroom outcomes. Teachers have skills to close gaps for learners. Teachers enjoy every lesson. Head of institutions find focus. Families are healthier. Communities thrive. That’s the power of your generosity.

Meet the Community Changing Lives

Village Ambassadors are generous, passionate, and determined people – like you – from around the world. Our members have already transformed over thousands of lives with foundational learning skills. Stand with us and change thousands more. You’re going to fit right in.

I was inspired to become a Village Ambassador because of the many ways they give people tools that enable them to succeed. They give a hand up rather than a handout! This is the kind of giving that keeps on giving–multiplying as the receivers become empowered to help others also.  My monthly donation is a small thing for me, but it makes a world of difference to those on the receiving end.

In 2015, I had the opportunity to spend time with the SAWA team. Seeing the impact this ministry had in the lives of students prompted me to invest monthly. The financial investment is kingdom work with SAWA, and that is important to me. Not only are they educating students, but they are also making a spiritual impact on their lives and the community for generations. I count it a privilege to serve and support SAWA. Through their updates, events and now as a board member, I’ve been able to be a part of this amazing community doing kingdom work in Kenya.
